Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area

One of the crown jewels of the Oregon Coast, Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area is a must-visit when exploring Pacific City. As the southernmost of the Three Capes—alongside Cape Lookout and Cape Meares—it offers a dramatic coastal landscape that’s both scenic and adventurous.

Visitors are treated to sweeping views of Pacific City’s iconic Haystack Rock (not to be confused with the one in Cannon Beach), along with a massive sand dune that’s perfect for climbing—and running down—for a bit of thrill. The area is also a hotspot for surfers, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the local dory boats launching straight from the beach, a tradition unique to Pacific City’s fishing fleet.

Whether you’re looking to relax on the sand, surf the waves, or take in panoramic views from atop the cape, it’s easy to spend an entire day here. When it’s time to refuel, you’re just steps away from local favorites like Pelican Brewing Company, Ben & Jeff’s Burgers and Tacos, and Cape Kiwanda Marketplace. Surfers can also swing by Moment Surf Company, conveniently located nearby for gear and rentals.

Angler’s Delight

Pacific City is a dream destination for fishing enthusiasts. It sits where the Nestucca River and Little Nestucca River converge into Nestucca Bay before reaching the Pacific Ocean. This unique geography makes the area especially popular for salmon fishing, with both fall and spring runs drawing anglers from near and far.

Multiple boat launches provide easy access to the rivers and bay, whether you’re fishing from shore or heading out on the water. For those visiting from out of town, Nestucca River Outfitters offers guided trips and local expertise to help you make the most of your time on the water.

Horseback Riding on the Beach

There’s something unforgettable about exploring the Oregon Coast on horseback, and Pacific City’s wide, sandy shoreline makes it an ideal setting. Guided rides typically depart from the county boat launch off Sunset Drive, just a short walk from Bob Straub State Park.

Local outfitters like Twin Creeks Horse Rides and M&R Beach Rides offer guided experiences suitable for a range of skill levels, making it easy to enjoy the coastline from a whole new perspective.

Kayaking Adventures

For those who prefer to explore by water, Pacific City offers excellent kayaking opportunities. Calm stretches of the Nestucca River and Nestucca Bay are perfect for paddling, whether you’re a beginner or experienced kayaker.

Nestucca Adventures provides seasonal kayak rentals, making it easy for visitors to get out on the water.

A short drive north brings you to the scenic Sand Lake Estuary, accessible via Whalen Island or the Sand Lake day-use area—both popular launch points for a peaceful paddle surrounded by coastal beauty.

Farmers Markets (Seasonal)

During the summer months, Pacific City hosts a charming farmers market at the local library, typically running from June through September. It’s a great place to find fresh produce, handmade goods, and local flavor.

Nearby communities also join in the seasonal fun, with markets in Neskowin and Tillamook offering additional opportunities to explore the region’s local food and artisan scene.

Things to Do Near Pacific City

Just North of Town

Adventure seekers won’t want to miss the Sand Lake Recreation Area, a popular off-highway vehicle (OHV) area where visitors can ride ATVs, dune buggies, and dirt bikes across expansive sand dunes. Managed by the Siuslaw National Forest, it’s important to check rules and regulations before heading out. Rentals are available through Tsunami ATV Rentals.

For a quieter experience, Sitka Sedge State Natural Area offers miles of scenic trails winding through coastal forest and along the estuary—perfect for hiking and wildlife viewing.

Nearby Whalen Island, co-managed by Tillamook County Parks and Oregon State Parks, combines beach access, hiking trails, and water recreation. It’s an ideal spot for kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply soaking in the natural beauty.

South of Pacific City

Nature lovers should make time for the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which offers peaceful hiking trails, excellent birdwatching, and sweeping views over the bay and coastline. Be prepared for a narrow access road as you make your way in.

Discover Neskowin

Just south of Pacific City, the charming coastal village of Neskowin is well worth a visit. Its seasonal farmers market, running from late May through mid-September, showcases local artisans and fresh produce in a relaxed, community-focused setting.

Beachgoers will love Neskowin Beach State Recreation Site, home to the iconic Proposal Rock. At very low tides—especially during winter months—you may also catch a glimpse of the mysterious Neskowin Ghost Forest, a collection of ancient Sitka spruce stumps estimated to be around 2,000 years old, revealed after powerful coastal storms.

This stretch of the Oregon Coast offers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty—making Pacific City an unforgettable destination no matter the season.
